Five weeks into the 2008 NFL season and we have already seen plenty of surprises in team standings. Looking at one of the toughest divisions this year I am already very excited to see how the NFC east division is going to play out as all 4 teams are a contender for the playoffs although the Eagles have stumbled out of the gate. The Redskins to me are the surprise team of this division with their new coach and sweet schedule they have over the next 4 weeks they can easily be sitting pretty with a 7-1 record going into a bye week.
To me some of the other surprise teams in the NFC are the Chicago Bears who might actually have a quarterback in Kyle Orton. The biggest weak spot for the Bears the last couple of years may finally have the stability to actually drive their offense on a consistent basis. Two surprise stinkers in the NFC so far this year to me are the Seattle Seahawks and Philadelphia Eagles both of which are in divisions that they can not really afford any more crucial losses.
A look over at the AFC and here are some of the big surprises so far with the Tennessee Titans leading the pack at 5-0 thanks to a stellar defense that just out performed the Ravens in a classic battle this past week. The other 2 surprise teams to me happen to be in the AFC East with the first place Buffalo Bills, WoW! The other team which is going through some major over hauls with a new coach and headmaster Bill Parcells seems to be improving quicker than expected as the Miami Dolphins have pulled off some big wins against some legitimate playoff teams the San Diego Chargers this past week and the big shocker against the Patriots. Parcells and coach Sparano have this team growing by leaps and bounds in the confidence department. I certainly would not have picked them to win those 2 games back to back, after those first two losses I had them at 0-4 at this point. I guess the Parcell’s magic is still in effect down in Miami.
The other big drama that just seems so bizarre to me is the plight of referee Ed Hochuli and the missed call in Denver. Obviously a missed call and Hochuli admitted himself how distraught and upset he was for the embarrassment that happened there. Now he is in the headlines again for a missed face mask call in the Saints game. Unfortunately for Hochuli and his crew they will be scrutinized for every play they call for the rest of this season and it’s a shame that the media is giving more press to the referee than the actual game. Referee’s are human and they like all the rest of us are going to make some mistakes and miss a few calls now and then. I am certain that of all the games called this past week there were some other plays that were missed, we don’t seem to be reading any news about those call though. Fun stuff in the NFL this year!
