Another Year Of College Football Without Playoffs

College football 2008 has been another great season and as we come closer to the end of the regular season there is only one thing more that I could hope for. That of course is the one thing that millions of college football fans would like to see and that is a playoff season with a true championship determined at the end of the whole thing. Is this a dream? Why yes it is as we plow through another season with no playoffs and no clear championship.

We will suffer through yet another bowl season of games where rankings and bowl games will be set up based on the BCS rankings and money I suppose. I like so many other college football fans really despise the BCS ranking system and would be dancing in the streets come the day we do away with this ranking system and set up a real league type of atmosphere for college football.

I realize that there are plenty of sites out there that have proposed ways to pull off a playoff type bracket system. I think a playoff bracket system would only help college sport elevate to a whole new level for the fans. I know a lot of people that are big time football fans but do not give college football a second look because of the lack of a playoff bracket.

MAC ChampsThere must be a way that the colleges can come to some sort of an agreement. The coaches want it, I know the fans would love it and there has to be a good amount of schools that would welcome it as well. Here’s my suggestion as simple and basic as I see it. Divide the country geographically into 4 sections, NE, NW, SE and SW divisions with the eastern conference and the western conference. Simply decide how many playoff teams you wan to allow. I would go with 16 or even 24 at the most and teams get into the playoffs based on records and points scored to help settle tie breakers. Culminating in a championship game on the second Saturday of the new year! Just in time for us to settle into the NFL playoffs.

Watching any kind of sport or game really gets exciting and more meaningful if the winners are determined by their capacity to score and play the ball. I believe the players will be best trained in college. So why not give them the feel of a real game. They should do away with their old ranking system and go grab those points to get to the top of the list!
